If you ask the kids…… My favorite things are M & M’s and dachshunds! |

Family is a big part of my life. Above is a picture of my sister Connie and her two sons, Greg and Tim. I am also “mother” to two dachshunds, Pepper and Chloe. Connie is holding Chloe when she was a puppy.
Below is a picture of Lynn VanVeelen. Good friends are also important in my life! |

I moved to Milan with my parents, Joyce and Richard, my older brother Robert and my younger sister Connie when I was a fifth grader. My father was an agent for State Farm Insurance. My mother was a stay at home mom who worked part time at our church. My brother is currently the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Director. My sister works in the Microbiology Lab at the University of Michigan Hospital as a Senior Medical Technologist. Family has always played an important role in my life. I remember how proud my mother was back in the fall of 1976 when I was hired as a second grade teacher at Jones Elementary School in Milan. I wish she could be here to see me working at Symons.
I have worked for Milan Area Schools for all of my 30+ years in education. I received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Eastern Michigan University and a post-graduate degree from the University of Toledo. I continue to take additional courses in administration to stay current and learn as much as I possibly can about being a principal.
I was a second grade teacher at Jones Elementary School for 4 years before moving to Paddock to teach third grade. Being a classroom teacher was an incredibly rewarding experience. I taught third grade at Paddock for many years before deciding to become a Media Specialist. I had opportunities to work both in the library and computer lab and loved being able to teach all kindergarten through fourth graders weekly. When the shared assistant principal position opened I jumped at the chance to apply because it gave me the opportunity to learn a new role and challenge myself once again.
I am thrilled to be the principal of Clayton Symons Elementary School. Mr. Symons hired me and I had a great deal of respect for him. To be given the opportunity to work in a building named after him is an honor. We are lucky to have many extraordinary teachers in Milan and the staff at Symons works hard to make Symons Elementary School an exceptional school for upper elementary students. I look forward to the challenges we face and opportunities that await us in the future. I love living and working in Milan. It’s a great community and I plan to spend the rest of my career in Milan working with the students and families who live here.
