There is a national need to engage students in their own learning and make sure their efforts are relevant to competing in a global society. Integrating real world and real time learning into the curriculum and other activities for students is additionally difficult for all schools. With this in mind, MHS has partnered with the National Civility Center on the Business as Educational Partners (BAEP) Initiative. This initiative will not only meet the present demands but allow students to sustain their learning and viability in the economic market place. The BAEP Initiative will produce the following outcomes:  З          The development of a comprehensive portfolio program beginning in the 9th grade and culminating before graduation during the end of the last semester of the 12th grade. З          Recruiting and implementing business partners for every Junior/Senior SRT classroom. Using an SRT teacher and classroom, these business partners will assist in the development of the student’s portfolio and provide real world relevance and instruction to the student’s learning. The business partner will remain with same homeroom for the year and on a monthly basis provide their reflections on the present state of the working world. З          Developing entrepreneurial strategies to implement into the present or new curriculum. These strategies will reflect the changing world of the market place – and focus on a real world project at Milan High. З          Create other events with the private sector to increase student awareness of opportunities and current best practices – such as Career Shadows and internships. Collaborate and replicate other unique student initiatives in the area of employment development. Grow the ideas and concepts that reflect the current local job market as well as region, state, nation and the world. At the first BAEP session, students met their partner and spent time learning about the person's industry and career. With our Junior/Senior SRT's sorted by what your child indicated as their preferred Pathway (either by ACT or by school survey), MHS has put partners into an SRT that has a similar interest. The plan for the remaining meetings is to pick a project tied to the Career Pathway that will provide problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork and other soft skills that students need to thrive in the career world. All meetings during SRT. For more information on our partners and the BAEP program, go to www.milanareaschools/hs and click on the Principal's Notes. ACT/MME: All juniors will receive ACT preparation during the next two weeks to help them prepare for the MME/ACT in March. Our staff has studied the ACT and the best practice to help students be successful. Each junior will attend three sessions, and will be offered an web-based practice test during these sessions. Juniors Can Earn Two Exam Exemptions this Semester: The junior team is offering two exam exemptions for Juniors for the following: One exemption can be earned for a documented college visit. Most juniors will attend a visit to EMU with Mr. Price, but a second visit, with parents, will be counted as School Business and be honored with an exam exemption. This spring is the time to take your child to college campuses and meet with registration officials – so MHS counts up to five college visits as School Business. Students can also earn an exemption for a one-day Career Shadow. This information was presented to juniors in SRT – for more information, contact Mr. Gill at 439-5059. Seniors Scholarships & Graduation: If your senior child has failed any semester courses, make sure he/she is still on pace to graduation. Contact the teacher and Mrs. Goffee. Most Milan local scholarships applications are due on Feb. 8th – so make sure your child has submitted his/her application. (Not all deadlines are Feb. 8th.)
